Maltais was a part of 6 seasons with the National Hockey League with the Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Detroit Red Wings, and Columbus Blue Jackets. Maltais also attended at the Pittsburgh Penguins training camp in 1997 but was then released before the beginning of the regular season.
